Wando High School transitions to online learning

Sitting on the couch at my grandparents' home, it took two clicks and there I was - in Dr. Jason Brisini's office back at school. Face to face over a video-based online learning portal called Cisco Webex, we were talking in real time, though miles away from each other.

With the closure of all dine-in services in the state of SC, the COVID-19 virus has left restaurants struggling to keep their businesses running. Many have turned to curbside pickups, takeout, or closing all together. Martin’s Barbecue has taken a different approach. Each day of the week, they set up base in a different location around Charleston County, bringing in customers from all over town. Junior Jake Haire, an employee at Martin’s, says “We just want to get out into our local communities and give them [local residents] something to get outside for, while staying safe... Right now, you just have to get out there and keep your business going.” ——— For daily coverage on COVID-19 and its effects on our community, see the link in our bio. ——— Photos by @grahamcalister

I founded the Spotify account under the name of Wando Tribal Tribune. I chose to create a Spotify account for the publication because Spotify is a platform that a lot of our audience uses on a daily basis. I wanted to create a presence on this app to contrast a lot of the serious topics we discuss in our paper. The playlists are a fun way to interact with other students and create a soundtrack to the topics we cover. We publish a list monthly, coinciding with a story or theme of the month.
Here is the second playlist that I made for the Spotify account. Because of varying reasons, Charleston celebrates Pride and have their festival in the month of September rather than June. For this reason, I decided to curate this Playlist with songs representing concepts of Pride, self-love and acceptance -- all values that the 10th annual Pride festival in Charleston stand for. I received a lot of messages on social media from listeners who loved this playlist and wanted to see more from this social media account.
For the November issue of the paper, I wrote about the legalization and expansion of the CBD industry in the state of South Carolina. I was able to tour a hemp farm, observe the production process and cover a topic that many of the students at Wando are interested in. This experience was something that I wanted to take into the Spotify social media presence by crafting a playlist that reflected CBD and its properties.
